Charles Loring Brace (1826-1890), founder of the Children's Aid Society


Children's Bureau: An agency within the Administration for Children and Families in the US Department of Health and Human Services. It provides grants to states and communities to operate a range of child welfare services including child protective services (child abuse and neglect) family preservation and support, foster care, adoption and independent living.

American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children: A nonprofit national organization for professionals engaged in all aspects of services for maltreated children and their families. Disseminates of state-of-the-art practice in all professional disciplines related to child abuse and neglect.

Child Abuse Prevention Network: An organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. Founded in July 1995, as an outreach project of the Family Life Development Center, Cornell University, and subsequently sponsored by LifeNET, Inc.

ECPAT International: A global network of organizations and individuals working together for the elimination of child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children for sexual purposes.

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children:
Provides services nationwide for families and professionals in the prevention of abducted, endangered, and sexually exploited children. DYFS- https://www.state.nj.us/humanservices/dyfs/index.html- State organization to ensure protection of child, investigate allegations of child abuse and place children in appropriate homes if they need to be removed from their biological parents.

RDTC-The Metropolitan Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center is one of the four state-designated centers for the evaluation and treatment of children who may have been the victims of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse or neglect. The mission of the center is to provide a sensitive and caring setting for children and their families to receive professional and compassionate treatment.

The program is part of Beth Israel Medical Center. The staff consists of physicians, psychologists, social workers and support staff. The RDTC maintains a strong working relationship with DYFS, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, and Wynona House. The majority of the children are referred to through DYFS.

RDTC provides:
-Medical and psychological evaluations Services for the families of abused and neglected children.
-Medical and psychological follow-up care for children who have been hospitalized for abuse or been seen in the ER.
-Education and training to medical professionals, child protective workers, law enforcement, schools, and other community agencies.

* The Wynona House is an example of an organization in Essex County that is built around services for those involved with child abuse. It's mission is to promote the healing of victims of child abuse by providing a strong community response to investigation, prosecution, treatment and prevention of child abuse. This is accomplished by providing a safe, child-friendly environment for child abuse investigations and treatment; supporting a multi-disciplinary process to working with child abuse victims; and working with the community to develop and enhance services to child abuse victims and prevention programs.

* Safe Horizons, New York City,

  • Mothers of Lost Children: Organization for women who have lost custody of their children as a result of making child abuse allegations.
  • National Council on Crime and Delinquency & the Children's Research Center: A nonprofit organization promoting effective, humane, fair and economically sound solutions to family, community and justice problems. NCCD conducts research, promotes reform, and works to reduce crime and delinquency. Contains research findings, publications and internet resources on child victimization.
  • National Foundation for Abused and Neglected Children: A nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the administration of juvenile justice, research into the incidence, cause, and the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

  • Child Abuse Effects - Identifies the four types of child abuse, including signs, effects and statistics for each. Details the impact on sexual abuse victims, profiles sex offenders, and provides a forum to write your own child abuse story.
